New Publication: June 2010 Basic Services Update

Analysis of Kenya's Budget Allocation Patterns for Basic Education.

The overall objective of this research was to find out the country’s budgetary allocation pattern for basic education in urban slums, with a focus on 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2008/09 financial years. This research was carried out through collection of the relevant data from the line ministries, specifically, the Ministry of Education.

Hakijamii was recently represented as the Annual Stakeholders’ Workshop held on 24th June 2010 to discuss effective water and sanitation services for the urban residents and the International Workshop on the theme “ Breaking barriers to delivery of Water and Sanitation Services in Informal Settlements- The case of Nairobi Water Company that was held between 23rd-24th April 2010.



2010/11 Peoples Budget

Blue October Day 2009
Hakijamii partnered with other organizations to organise the first ever Blue October Day on the Right to Water in Kibera Nairobi which was attended by thousands of cumminity members, civil society representatives and developments partners. During the meeting the community groups launched a peoples manifesto on the right to water and sanitation. >>>>More
Right to Education Public Hearings
A number of accountability and public hearing sessions on accountability on the Right to education were organised by the community groups which brought together officials from relevant government ministries and local leaders. >>>>More
Exchange Visits
Hakijamii recently facilitated two community exchange visits by Nairobi Peoples Settlements network to Mombasa and Kisumu respectively. During the visits the groups met their counterparts in the two towns and agreed on key joint campaign actions on the right to housing and basic services.>>>>More
In other news, Hakijamii Consolidated the work of the Urban Housing Rights Coalition by supporting quarterly reflection meetings that have enabled the Coalition to develop and implement joint campaigns on housing rights and evictions.

Hakijamii also supported the Railway Dwellers Federation to develop and implement a clear follow-up plan regarding the planned relocation by the Railway authorities. The Federation sent a letter to the Corporation which ensured that they will be fully consulted on any future changes to the original plan.

LANDMARK DEVELOPMENT IN GARISSA JULY 2010
n its continued commitment to work with and support emerging popular democratic grassroot organizations throughout the country, Hakijamii supported seven representatives from Muungano wa Wanavijiji, Kutoka Network, Nairobi Peoples Settlement Network, Soweto Peoples’ Settlement Forum, Kazi ya Chini and Miss. Koch (all based in Nairobi) for an exchange visit to Garissa.More >>>>

Land Sector Non State Actors
Hakijamii has continued to be a Key partner in the Land Sector Non State Actors which has been vigorously lobbying for the adoption of the National Land Policy and During the Period was part of the group that met with Key stakeholders who included Members of Parliament, Religious Leaders and Community Groups. These efforts finally resulted in the adoption of the Land Policy by Cabinet in June 2009. Hakijamii was part of the small team of experts who then proceeded to draft the sessional paper which is currently pending before parliament.

Hakijamiii has also continued to maintain close strategic relationships with Key International Partners in a Bid to boost its capacity towards effective advocacy. During this Period, Hakijamii was represented at a training workshop organised by Dignnity and other organizations in Spain, The Amnesty International General Assembly in Turkey, an International writeshop on the Global Tool Land Network organised by UN Habitat, the Dignity International Strategic Planning Meeting in France and an International Workshop on the African Union Land Policy Framework in Kigali Rwanda organised by International Land Coalition.

Recent-Publications

The Advocacy Project (AP) recruits students to help marginalized communities tell their story and claim their rights. Christy Gillmore and Louis Rezac are inturns from the project currently based at Hakijamii. They have been visiting Hakijamii's community partners as part of a wider intiaitive to profile various groups. The information they are collecting will eventually be posted on two blogs covering community profiles and project theme areas. You may follow thier work at Christies Blog and Louis Blog
